the injured party in leaving Burmah in 1879, and many other

instances besides that they are unable to enumerate. Further,

petitioners' humble nation has carried on trade and specially

maintained amicable relations with your honourable nation for

many years, so that according to justice, you should not refuse

to settle this difficulty amicably for them. Being grieved at

the state of danger and confusion of their humble nation, and

considering the distress of the people, petitioners, aroused by

the voice of public indignation, disregard the distance of one

thousand li to come by water to Hong-Kong to present their

petition with a detailed account of the circumstances and pray

that their petition may he submitted to His Excellency the

Governor of Hong-Kong with a request that His Excellency will

send a telegram to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs

so that a method may be devised for the protection of the re-

form party and their restoration to office and for the protec-

tion and restoration to his throne of the Emperor, that a chan-

ge of method (may be introduced) in order to carry out the

new administration, that the people may have their ills redress-

ed and obtain their rights, and that sincere friendly relations

with the neighbouring (States) may be amicably cultivated,

And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
